Definitions of Yoga:“Yoga is the cessation of the modifications of the mind. Then the Self is established in his own essential nature. Otherwise, there is self-identification with the mental modifications.” Yoga sutras of PATANJALI “Yoga means UNION . This should happen in the deepest part of our hearts. Then, there is pleasure, there is freedom. Then, there is bliss, not followed by a valley of darkness. Then, happiness is eternal and the celebration is eternal” OSHO “Yoga is the conscious extended effort towards self-perfection. It is spiritualization of life.” Swami SIVANANDA “Yoga is a systematic effort aimed at achieving self-perfection through the expression of the being's latent potentialities and the union of the human individual with the universal and transcendental existence.” Sri AUROBINDO "Yoga is a method for physical, mental and spiritual development; the union of the microcosm with the macrocosm. It may be said that it is the union of the individual with God, but personally, I try to avoid using the word God because He is omnipresent, omnipotent, has no beginning, no end, no boundaries. So, how can a person with a limited brain explain that which has no end?” INDRA DEVI “Our various Yogas do not conflict with each other: each of them leads us to the same goal and makes us perfect. Only each has to be strenuously practiced. The whole secret is in practicing.” Swami VIVEKANANDA "Yoga is uniting the soul with the spirit; it is the union with that happiness everybody longs for. Isn't it a wonderful definition? Amidst the ever renewed bliss of the Spirit you become convinced that the happiness you feel is greater than any you have ever experienced.” Swami YOGANANDA "Yoga is a philosophy, a way of life where art and science meet.” Geeta S. IYENGAR "Let's not make distinctions saying that we practice a better or worse kind of yoga than this or that kind. Yoga is one, such as the world is one and the people of the world are one.” B. K. I_64. Anyone who practices yoga actively, whether young, old or too old, sick or lean, may become a siddha (perfect). I_65. Success comes to him who is engaged in the practice. One who discards laziness gets success (siddhi). By merely reading books on Yoga, one can never get success (shastas). I_66. Siddhi cannot be attained by adopting a particular dress. It cannot be gained by telling tales about yoga: strenuous practice is the key to success. This is true, there is no doubt. Hatha Yoga Pradipika
"The eight limbs of yoga are: yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and samadhi." Patanjali; sutra 29, chapter 2
